I assume because their stocks and public image are at rock bottom, acquiring, rebranding and restructuring them would be fairly easy. Microsoft doesn't lose much, but gains some very powerful IPs and the image of 'the good guys' in the end.
At least that's my own conjecture. Keep in mind that I'm not really well versed in thee business side of things, but it's an easy enough motive to figure out.

Crash Remake in 2018 sold over 10 million copies, and motivated them to make a new game. Spyro remake in 2018 outsold that years Pokemon. Tony Hawk 5 sucked ass, but the 1+2 remakes hit 1 million copies inside of a week. Diablo 2 Remake is out this year and going to probably crush sales. Starcraft is the OG E-sport and still kills in Korea.
Sure almost none of that stuff is new, but nostalgia sells.

Sony and Microsoft just won't stop buying stuff, damn. I guess everyone wants to be the Disney of their own industry.
Whilst I'll give you the IP strength, 10 million copies is laughable compared to the shit CoD pulls on microtransactions alone. They may mean something to you or me, but they're mere glimmers to the jewel that is CoD for people that can wave around 70BUS$.

Mostly seems to be a reaction to Microsoft's acquisitions, because they know for sure that they can't throw the money dong as hard as MS.
I'm mostly waiting for MS to show their hand for wanting a return on investment.
