It might've helped them to show more than one game though, like it was there was barely anything on show about games, they were already kinda showing Forza, why not make it a demo? just a race, it couldn't have hurt.
And we all learned with the PS3 launch that those pre-rendered trailers are all fluff and nothing more.

There's still a chance for Pikmin 3, Bayonetta 2, and Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem trailers to blow us out of the water (though I guess Nintendo is technically doing there own thing just around the same time?).

Stole the words right out of my mouth, it's all gonna hinge on the games for both Sony and MS and while Xbox already unveiled their box PS4 still has yet to do so.
And judging from E3s past Microsoft's conferences have always been a bit derpy, specially when they had those quaterback-wannabe-dudebros playing Kinect on stage. That was just painful to watch.

They do it all with Nintendo Direct now, that's why they wont have a conference this year. Those things have been pretty successful for them.

Which is a terrible idea. Every major news organization under the sun reports on E3, nobody cares about Nintendo Direct. All this does is cement their position of having no market presence.

You would be surprised about the people that actually watch those, Nintendo is actually being smart about it for once, why? Because they're pulling an Apple. Having their own event they get to control the message unlike going to E3 where they're just gonna get poo-pooed for not having HD graphics.
They're also very smart about doing them during slow periods of news out so every game outlet under the sun has to talk about Nintendo or else loose web traffic.

Quick review, which one of these caused the Wii to be a breakout hit?
1: African markets
2: Hardcore gamers who read gaming media
3: Normal people who liked motion control and heard about it on CNN
None of those, what caused the Wii success was nothing more than people playing the damn things, did you honestly think that people who like to watch CNN care about waggle?
If anything, what sold more Wiis more than anything else were 2 things:
#1. Wii Sports, whatever you think about the game you can't deny it was simple fun that anyone could enjoy, it's part of the reason Wii software wasn't selling to these "CNN People" you're talking about.
#2. The whole "Wii would like to play" add campaign they had, because it was simple and to the point, it showed how the system work without making it into something ridiculous.

What sold the Wii was nothing more than good PR and excellent word of mouth at the perfect moment in time, the CNN stories about it came later, when people actually go a controller with waggle on their hands, or what, did the people keeping an eye in X war or Y conflict around the world also had a priority to follow the Wii while it was being developed?

Man, the last time CNN did real reporting on a war I don't think I even watched TV.
(I mean the Gulf War)
And the fact that at launch it was almost a third of the price of the other two.
I remember waiting to get mine, there were like 20 people for the Wii, 10 for a 360, and one crazy guy with a tent and a hotplate waiting to shell out almost $1,000 CDN for a PS3.

FF XIV: Walked to the End
Started Legend of the Galactic Heroes (14/07/23), pray for me.
They tried doing what Sony did and focused on the console itself. Except MS focussed on the software and whatnot rather than the hardware.
The problem was, the content was, a majority of which, stuff we could have lived without and things most people probably already have. MS gonna need an amazing E3 conference.
Honestly, next gen seems pretty scary unless PS4 turns out to be the next PS2.

So Sony actually has a chance to come out on top now, with the Wii U pretty much ignored in favour of the 3DS and shit, and the Xbox One Percent Approval being laughed at by the entire internet. As long as the PS4 doesn't fuck up in a major way, it's got a chance.
You know you've fucked up when you make the Wii U look good in comparison to your console.
