It's crazy when businesses make decisions based off of some fictitious "modern audience", probably on Twitter, most of whom do not actually buy their product, instead of their real fanbase.
Would they keep doing it so regularly if it had better than even odds of losing them money? Either they're all irrational or they're largely acting in self-interest.

Oh, I do. That's why nowadays before buying games, I often join the devs' Discord to see if... I am among Kindred. For example, the Nobeta Discord.
And this is far from their first rodeo, so experience has clearly told them that it works out for them.
I will say it is definitively a stupid decision, however.
