It's really not. It is suppose to facilitate better communication regarding which Hurricane is being discussed between meteorologist and people in general. Multiple hurricanes can happen during a single hurricane season, sometimes happening simultaneously. If they weren't named, it would be a jumbled mess in regard to communication leading to more deaths.
