Something in the past of the story which needn't have happened at all - but there's also no reason that it couldn't have happened, and it all works with what's to come.
I agree with this statement 100%, I always liked fanfics that go out of their way to show us the character doing something that never happens in canon but that could fit in between chapters/episodes seamlessly.

Also, fics that go out of their way to troll people expecting another fix fic. IE, Peggy Sue fic where X character goes back in time to stop shit from happening? turns out the shit happened in the first place because X traveled back in time to stop the shit from happening, they're very rare but it is glorious when they do happen

I like a good romance as well, but when it's written straight as a romance, none of this gotta-save-the-world-again crap just to have a romantic subplot shoved in.

    Spoilered for your convenience

See, peggy sue fics would be amazing if they were groundhog day. The peggy sue being made ineffectual due to not actually being able to create lasting change all the while they age mentally and slowly grow beyond the trials and tribulations they faced in the story. But that isn't really a thing outside of like a couple of isolated examples that get abandoned. And Bill Murray.

Another thing I like is when authors talk about arguing with the characters in their heads as they write. It may sounds crazy to some, but I like when people can internalize a character to such a degree that they "break free of the plan," so to speak. That gives me a sense that the characters aren't just cogs in the wheel of the story, even manipulating the creator.

I actually have read a fic like that which actually got completed.

For My Little Pony though, so I'm not sure you would want to read it.

I can like the social aspects of it sometimes.

. . . Maybe I should post when I don't want to punch the world.

I like being able to talk/converse with the author about the story and have others join in which is hard on ff.net when you can only do it in PMs. It's why I like BL.

I guess...I like stories where fanon is at a minimum and things are approached with the idea that you do you best. That you respect the source material while trying to do your own story with it. I admit to being new to Nasuverse fandom (Liked F/SN for a while but wasn't in the fandom so to speak) But in the other fandoms the ones that were good the ones that I still like and occasionally reread just for fun are those stories where the author took the time and effort to make something unique, while at the same time respecting the source material. I don't mind AU's, AR's, Fusions or Crossovers, but I want the author to try, to write all the characters to the best of their ability as people.

When a fanfic does that, it's something special to me.

A well written post-canon fic that is not only in character, but is something that I can actually picture happening to the characters after the events of the canon storyline. These are sadly much harder to find than I once thought, and I always love post-canon fics that do manage to do it right. Another love of mine is a well written AU fic, especially when the canon characters involved are still kept IC despite the change in setting. I can forgive OOCness in an AU setting more than most, especially if the circumstances of the fic's AU backstory have contributed to said OOCness, but when I find an AU with IC interactions I want to take it out to dinner and fuss over it all night.

You've got someone who is using a blank slate sort of character with like hardly any decently fleshed out canon personality or backstory, which should for all intents and purposes end up as an OC in all but name, and you end up with a decent - great, even, if you're lucky - character who fits so well with the case of the rest of the fictional universe so well that it's hard to believe when you consider the source material that this character is basically nothing more than a hunk of worldbuilding, a slab of rock and some mortar in the series' foundation.

On that note, who else here loves them some well-written OCs? They're too damn rare in ANY fandom, let alone T-M.
McJon01: We all know that the real reason Archer would lose to Rider is because the events of his own Holy Grail War left him with a particular weakness toward "older sister" types.

Would you mind listing a few examples? I'm actually really curious to see some good ones.

Counter Guardian EMIYA, Nasu's OC for his megacrossover mythology fanfiction, the "Type-MOON Original" to his Super Robot Wars of world folklore and history.

    :3c

I kid. That aside I'm going to have to think about that for a few, considering it's been ages since I've read a fanfic that could qualify as such.

    - - - Updated - - -

Wait hold up I actually do have one now, and it's from a Type-MOON fanfic!

The detective from Heaven's Side Story, Michael Christian. Sure, he's the hardboiled, everyman detective you've probably seen before in noir, but he's a great example of the archetype being used well in a setting filled with mystery and horror such as the Nasuverse. He has great banter with Rin, the believable sounding kind that you'd expect to hear from someone who is world-worn and in the know but has to deal with the inherent badness of the moonlit world.

    Well, make that two, actually.

Pretty much any named character who is not present in official sources in Dullahan's Maybe I'm a Lion Knk x Prototype crossover. You'd swear you were reading a spy thriller on the level of Bourne and Clancy with the exchanges between and actions taken by some of these guys. Keep a lookout for Mulder/Scully expies, a man wearing an out of place Hawaiian shirt, and anything involving the Three Kings and Áki Weisstein. Especially Áki, that magnificent bastard is still causing trouble for the modern day characters and he's been dead for 50-some years.

I very much appreciate you going through all this work. I'll definitely be sure to check them out.

Also the Emiya thing had me laughing, thanks for that!

Now I want a BMW sequel. Or at least need to replay BMW.

Not the one that's been forever stuck in limbo that our guys've been not really sort not at all anymore working on. Because that won't happen ever anytime soon if at all.

You know, I hear that Dante Alighieri guy had some pretty good OCs for a Christianity fanfic he wrote a while back. What was that called again...?

Just to be clear, do you mean Ludlum Bourne, or Lustbader Bourne?

And you're welcome. I don't read as much fanfic as I used to, so I like to pimp out what I like to others.

It's got a nice amount of worldbuilding, and even doubles as an example of decently done SI!

Thing I love: When I can read a fanfiction way way way way back a long time ago, reread it again, and still just absolutely adore it.

Just reread this Legend of Zelda fic that I think I read initially in 1999. Still makes me smile.
