I didn't say it was surprising. Watanabe said from the start that there would be serious episodes, in an inverse ratio from Bebop.

By the by, BLers, which do you prefer? Dandy dub or Dandy subbed? I personally watch both so that I can get that Grade A in entertaining translation and get my weekly dose of Viva Namida and the Everett ED, but if I had to choose then it's definitely the dub.

i only watch it in japanese, because if im gonna watch something in either the original language or another language thats not my native language, i take that.
I like going at it raw. A raw dandy is the best dandy.
I prefer the dub. The dub voice actors feel like they're having fun with the script, and it really shows with the energy of their lines.
Plus, a LOT more jokes and references that I can actually understand.

I hate agreeing with InfamousMan but yes the dub is better, as it pretty much always is with Watanabe shows. Might not be true for Kids on the Slope (was that ever even dubbed?) but Kids on the Slope was hot garbage so who cares.

Well, the Dub is always better for shows specifically aimed at a Western Audience. Kids on the Slope wasn't really for Westerners, so it is an exception.
You can tell that English voice actors have a better time dubbing more Western-focused shows like Big O, Cowboy Bebop, etc than the Japanese ones do. You can even tell this by the dub of the Lupin III second anime series.
