That's one thing I really don't like about Korra. All the super rare powerful abilities like metalbending and lightning are all fucking over the place.

Oh my god it appears bending is treated as a skill and knowldge that progresses with the years rather than black box magic. Color me shocked.

Ofc making lightning in a controlled environment and using it in combat are two different things so yeah.

Well for an orphan street rat
Lightning generation isn't that common either and they literally power the entire city, making them valuable (beyond the 'being a bender' baseline). It makes little sense for the job to pay badly. And sure, Mako is an orphan and stuff but I'm pretty sure he has a proper sense of monetary value.
(The working conditions seemed p safe, they were properly organized and the workload/work hours are clearly not crippling. That's def not a sweatshop)
