Recently my google search image results started to look like this:

The second screen usually shows up for me once I've clicked on a picture, in it's own drop down window.

I know, and that's exactly the problem. I can't seem to switch to the "setting" you posted (as you can see, the screen you have in you big image is different from the result I get).

What browser are you using? I get similar results to your own, with the options on the side, when I use Opera.

However, when I use Chrome or Firefox I get the proper layout. I used to get the same with Opera, but somewhere along the way it changed.

Edit: Ah nevermind, Just notice the bar on your screenshot, looks like it's Opera for you as well.

Well obviously you have to unplug it to turn it off, Google doesn't have a power switch. And the 30 seconds is very important for reasons I don't fully understand.
