If the mods are friends who we trust to manage interactions with other friends, then that's all the more reason to judge them harshly. Friends should protect their friends from shittier friends who deny or question their right to live.

Fundamentally I think the problem is less political and just that this is an Old Internet site still being more or less operated according to Old Internet rules. And if what you want is a paradigm shift in that regard I think we can't offer that.

If we start banning people with political opinions I don't like this site will have 5 users. This simply isn't a viable way of going forward, as much as just letting people say racist shit and drive them off our site is. But if you are racist and we don't notice we don't really have a basis to act on.

I can comment on this specifically but with the politics thread one of my big problems modding it was that I was in there arguing on the left side so banning people according to my personal feelings of what is or is not over the line would basically result in me banning everyone who disagrees with me in there, which I consider poison for good discussion culture.

You will also be happy to know that this chart is pretty old, and with Lumina coming out Meltycord started going pretty hard on that kind of thing. Not as harsh as UNI discord where, back in the day, I got temp banned back in the day for saying TRIGGER WARNING 'In order to get 8c j.c j.2c on Nanase consistently you need to press it like a black person', exact quote. But with Molty in charge now, a whole bunch of people got banned over being way too expressive to newcomers. It really is a nice place with a deep culture, go play melty right now.

I'm not sure even closed spaces like this can really be called Old Internet anymore. The old internet rules died a while ago, and thus so did the detente between the far right and everyone else. I suppose some of it is contingent upon users who notice subtle racism either being directed towards them or in general to complain, but even then, they have other things going on, and we have dedicated mods for a reason.

Also, I understand your objection towards blanket-banning right wing discussion and opinions from sites like ours, since it could give their victim complexes ammunition, but really, they need little reason to complain about conservative discrimination, and the net good rooting out far right opinions would do outweighs the net harm.

Also, whether or not we take a hardline stance on the far right at least doesn't do much to change the uphill battle we have against the comforting lies of the red pill, QAnon, and reactionary politics in general. We are concerned about accuracy in some way, but they only have to go off gut feeling and are not inhibited by distaste for flagrant BS. Can the online left do better to accept those who want to change and express their willingness to listen in good faith? Yes, but that doesn't mean we can't take a hard stance against the far right to rescue discourse and promote more engagement from fans of various marginalized identities and new fans in general.

This wasn't an uphill battle before, and the traditional strategy of just banning everyone and sticking your fingers in your ears has been more or less replaced in actual effect by a new generation of people who make leftist opinions as accesssible and fun as casual racism.

The problem really is that 99% of people generally dont yet have politics brain worms so the side that is either less annoying or associates the other side with shit that annoys you wins. Which is why the left had big political capital with nerds back when Thompson was around and lost it immediately when "the SJWs" replaced him.

I dunno if you were consciously on the internet around 2001-2003 but it was just as bananas as now, everything's just more visible today because of social media. Back in the old days it was concentrated on Funnyjunk and niche extremist forums and there were no rules or expectations at all, not a detente.

The problem at hand is that all human communication and coexistence relies on compromise, but the paradigm between what we call left and right wing has been so succesfully polarized and rooted in such core ethical concepts that neither side feels as if it can compromise.
