Yeah, I sort of am, but I'm not optimistic. The mods and I have different views about ensuring user safety.

Never seen a community get safer from overmoderating, just more formal and scared.

The same can be said of total freeform we ban whoever we like modding. Neither of those are ideal models.

Fwiw I dont think anyones safety is a concern, the most sensitive data you can give us is an email and you can control public visibility in case you gave us one you can be doxxed with.

Yeah, I don't think over moderating would be even close to a problem with my suggestions. Also, I'm not talking about user privacy concerns when it comes to safety.

Honestly it seems like the basis of this complaint has been "user safety" but that has yet to be defined. I think BL has had essentially one singular instance of a user doing anything that seemed genuinely threatening to another member. That involved a physical letter being sent from one person to the real life address of another person that he hated. By my own standards this forum is, uh, safe. So what are these standards of yours where the forum is apparently unsafe?

I dunno if you were consciously on the internet around 2001-2003 but it was just as bananas as now, everything's just more visible today because of social media. Back in the old days it was concentrated on Funnyjunk and niche extremist forums and there were no rules or expectations at all, not a detente.

I was 5 years old at that time and didn't really know about the internet. I concede your point.

That aside though, the general right wing vs left wing argument is stupid.

If you are not white, the right wing hates you. If you are white, the left wing hates you.

But yes this is what you project when you do overbearing moderation in the name of "safety", you create a space in which the existence of minorities and an apolitical majority is a conflict that needs constant tending to. Which isnt ideal but still done all over the internet.

if it works or not is up to your personal interpretation but as a person who is a member of a "minority" i would say no

if somebody does not feel safe in a forum because of some people, they can just leave or ignore and block those in question. It is not that hard imo.
But what do I know? I am just someone who is pretty much dead center in the political compass, which makes me too right in many circles

If you're talking about General News, it's a thread that was a complete trashfire. This thread was made in like 2014 when OP wanted to know more about the forum's infighting. Now it's politics because someone asked about General News and the CIA and coconspirators have done their absolute best to assure any political talk is as dissident, elgufing, rupturing, and maddening as can possibly be, claiming name of and laying waste to any space that manages to inch ever closer to mentioning it.

If you're going to blame anyone for that, instead blame late-18th century Parisian political cliques. Then again, I doubt they knew that their cafeteria lunch table seating choices would define political discourse for at least two centuries.

Ultimately, Gauf and Spoony are asking the mods to upend the entire system of how user behavior is moderated to “protect” the small percentage of people who could be offended by a given user’s statement. It is impractical, illogical, and unrealistic. In all likelihood, the BL moderators probably have better things to do than trying to cater to everybody’s sensibilities.
