This is Break we're talking about, right?
any idea what happened to terrablaze
While the old staff had a petty streak, I remember it differently.
They were extremely gun shy about laying down any discipline. It was partly the character of this community; like unruly soccer fans going out of control whenever a ref makes a call they don't like, the community would be quick to call out any warning at all, ever, on anyone, and much like a classroom where people want to test the teacher, it'd be a sport to try and see how much you can get away with. Most people were young and this was how they had fun on the internet. So it made the staff extremely hesitant to act unless it was a smoking gun, unless you found the perpetrator with a literal knife buried in someone's back at the time. Anything that was just disruptive but not explicitly rule breaking tended to get a pass, even though it was annoying, because it wasn't actually "breaking the rules." "Can we ban someone just because they're annoying?" would be a common topic. There was always a sense of laidback laissez faire, where if someone acts dumb it was just fixed by flaming them until they shut up instead of a moderator doing anything.
In other words, the mindset approaching these things was often "the staff is in the wrong and have to prove why this is worth doing something about."
And of course from the other side of things, there were multiple decisions that were petty, you'd have someone getting warned just for snarking at a mod while someone like Break would run free or Mike would get protected. So I wouldn't say the attitude was unjustified, but I don't think it was wholly on one party either. A lot of things people did back then that would've provoked resistance if the staff did anything would be quickly struck down today. The staff of the time also would seize on certain things like someone sock puppeting as a joke to permaban them just because they didn't like them, personally. So you can see why this kind of attitude was there.
It was different today, but the internet at large was very different. In general things like restricting expression was way more taboo.
Once the new staff came in we reformed the rules to have a greater sense of fairness and effectiveness, but BL is still pretty lenient compared to a lot of sites its size.
He never sleeps. He never dies.
Battle doesn't need a purpose; the battle is its own purpose. You don't ask why a plague spreads or a field burns. Don't ask why I fight.
Leogate was fun, it was all downhill from there.
As a moderator you in turn control a lot of the tone of the discussion itself however.
Old BL was very laissez-faire too, at least in the period in which I was active. There was both more traffic and fewer mods than in new BL. And it existed during the heyday of 4chan, although the forum culture was pretty distinct IMO.
don't quote me on this
I mean considering the last few pages it seems the moderators and admins have different memories of events.....
and yes im totally gonna say joking about shit like this is bad, i dont need to know of the history of every post when it seems like the staff were incompetent back then
I don't think anybody knows, even lorekeeper Cruor. The most prolific poster on BL, vanished one fine August...
Revisiting that thread also reminded me of TypeWannabe, one of the great characters of BL whose role in foundational forum culture is sadly overlooked by modern scholars.
<NEW FIC!> Revolution #9: Somewhere out there, there's a universe in which your mistakes and failures never happened, and all you wished for is true. How hard would you fight to make that real?

[12:40] Neir: lucina is pretty much flawless
You do not need to know the history, of course. Yet despite that, you misunderstand even the little you do see. You do not understand the context.
Nor did you understand that I wasn't even joking. The fact that Break persisted for 21k posts is a travesty. It was a sarcastic post, but not one made to make light of the situation.

You don't have to trust anything. You have nothing to add in either case. It does not concern you.
All I know is Break 0 Fatamoru 100, rest in piss to that weirdo!
