It worked because CV was actually reading Tsukihime at the time and those were his actual opinions.

But, TL;DR: Evospace made it in 2003, it was a forum of one translator group TLing Tsukihime, it fused with another to form mirror moon, then in 2011 proboards shit the bed because it was taking up so much bandwith and they didn't want to take away the porn, then they made this one, and now you're caught up.

The legends say that Mike made a bomb threat on IRC which led to Proboards shutting down Old BL during "negotiations" over the porn issue, but I'm doubtful.

I've heard the version where a Proboards guy who was in #blrefugees saw the joke about bombing Proboards made by Mike and, even more appropriately, hbomb.

Also there is a kernel of truth in the bandwidth thing in that another factor which some say caused the immediate shutdown was the sheer number of bots BLers were using to scrape all the data they could from the site before it disappeared. To cap the joke off, the most complete of those archives was then permanently misplaced.
