I don't know, in the context of what he's saying he could've just as easily said "catfish" and nobody would've batted an eye, plus "trap" still gets utilized quite a lot in the weeb districts of culture because of characters like Astolfo. It honestly doesn't feel like he was being transphobic based on what he was saying. But you do you.

Yeah, "trap" being used in weeb culture doesn't exactly pardon it from being transphobic, and considering how reactionary weeb culture has remained, it might actually reinforce the transphobic nature of that term.

Also, Astolfo is a femboy, and femboys and trans people all deserve absolute respect.

Maybe, but it's not like you have people who call themselves traps and live a trap lifestyle like how people identify as femboys.

haha yeah its not like a whole chunk of forumgoers would just sequester themselves in their own little corner of the forum and post among themselves even though it has little to nothing to do with TM and spend years there forming a subculture or anything haha

Except for the part where you totally do and tons of people identify as traps.

If you wish to discuss words and their evolution from old internet culture to current day I'd recommend making one as this is tangentially related at best.

Fair. Didn't really want to keep this going anyhow.

The Seventh was a fun place for the brief period between the twilight of the Elders and the second thirst epidemic, when it wasn't a cesspit of dudes trying to finesse internet dating simulators with elaborate meme-based mating rituals. Admittedly random ecks dee conversations are only ever really fun for the conversation-dominating people who are already familiar with one another, and the whole premise of a closed circle of butt-buddies got massively enabled by Discord anyway. I think incidental coexistence in a public space about a thing you won't be interested in forever has a bittersweet appeal, but if your love of TM fades away you might as well rebuild around the social circle you've created.

Then again that dynamic can be seen in most forums. Wonder if there are papers about these recurring social dynamics before everyone quit using forums
The ideal forum user life cycle in the golden age of forums tended, I think, to be:

    1. User A joins forum to discuss fandom/cars/etc.
    2. User A makes friends with some people on the forum
    3. User A starts exploring off-topic areas of the forum
    4. Friend circles form that cross on/off-topic boundaries
    5. User A settles into a sense of community, on/off-topic forum boundaries dissolve
    6. User A's interest in on-topic declines relative to investment in friends.

    Alternatively:

    1. User A joins forum to discuss fandom/cars/etc.
    2. User A discovers the RP section
    3. They are never heard from outside RP again.

In the age of Discord, step 4 onward transforms into a Discord server invite and while forum on-topic discussion remains healthy, off-topic ossifies as the community experience is transplanted to Discord. I think your other point is very spot-on though, and in BL2's case specifically it never helped that we were part of a larger circle of forums that trickled down directly from SomethingAwful and by default had a very dudes-dominated culture.

I'd say for some users, interest in the forum topic goes back and forth based on forum interactions. At least, that's how it's been fore over the past 3.5 years.

In order to improve the quality of discussion on the forum, each mod should be required to maintain a female sockpuppet with 5 posts/day minimum. I think this would be a unique feature for our forum.
