You'd think so, but regulations have been tightening up recently. They even made people wear helmets during hurling matches. How can anyone be expected to be able to stove someone's face in with a blunt instrument if they're wearing a helmet?

No, it is not. Costco is a bulk-purchase chain. Basically the inside looks like a warehouse.
Like, you get very good value for your money and everything is decent quality, but you do end up spending a lot because everything is in pretty big quantities.
The other good thing is the membership justifies itself because gasoline is like 20 cents cheaper per gallon than anywhere else (and still quality) and they have a pretty much "anything goes" return policy. There's a lot of other stuff inside like contractors, pharmacy, optometry and stuff but I never use them. Most of them have a tire center (for cars) which is pretty good.

One of the things I did as a college freshman with little disposable income but a Costco membership from work, was do laps around the Costco store until I got full on free samples.

I like going to Costco for the free samples. Heck everyone does, enough to get complaints and try to teach sample etiquette.
You can save $2000 by eating free samples at Costco.
