The real reason why people hate Bob while accepting plenty of gender bend is simple:

They are racists. Even if you are black, the hate you have with Bob is just simply the hate you have for yourself since you are not born white or whatever color.

To be fair, that's basically entirely because of the movies. The comics themselves are a dying medium with constantly smaller numbers being sold, which cause the prices to go up to compensate, which just continues the cycle even faster.
