In truth, it is not sure if she became a man. There is also an anecdote where, despite becoming a golden-winged bird after her death and vanishing in the skies, her corpse as a woman was left behind. Either way───── Afterwards, Caenis/Caeneus became a mighty warrior and ruled the lands as a tyrant.

I doubt they would do it to increase his popularity with the otaku. Caenis has already been incredibly popular since his introduction, they referenced his past before already, Wodime and others constantly refer to him as a male and regardless of his story, Caenis is already a half naked waifu with plenty of fanart.
If they were worried about his marketability, they'd have done away with all that and probably the rape too (and probably made him a SSR), so I don't think this cheeky "maybe he didn't transition!" will mean anything, really.
We'll see though, I'll wait for more info before I get mad.
