rationally though, it's true that Shinji's a good character because as much as he's called a pussy , he's just a kid with mental issues forced to fight eldritch horrors on a "robot" that makes him feel the damage to the "robot"'s body as if it were being done to his own body and the poor kid doesn't even have access to a therapist

Super Robot Wars Shinji Ikari was bearable, and forced through some much needed character development. Then became something of a decent character able to call out Kira Yamato on his bullshit. That Shinji Ikari is okay.
The Shinji Ikari of Evangelion who refused to develop and has to have his mommy pick up the ropes because he is too terrified out of his mind to do anything? That more or less gets dragged along for the ride of the plot used as an means-end by other people constantly? Without any actual development? Actually no, he does develop and gets worse instead of better.Shinji was executed very well, however.
Then there's End of Evangelion where he is jacking off to Asuka's unconscious body. Such an amazing and well-executed character.

Shinji Ikari is a terrible character and people acting like he some sorta example of perfect writing for a wimpy character is laughable. When Shinji Ikari has been written better, and developed better when handled by other franchises.
