Well feanor was that great elf dude right and gothmog was the leader of the balrogs. Didn't gothmog get toppled from a cliff or something. Anyway that's not the point I'm just saying in the regards of detail and richness of the world, the books are superior. I do admit that the fight scenes where better in the film however I like to imagine book faithful battles from time time. In the films they skip over loads of stuff. Most prominently most stuff in the shire/ruined arnor/north west, (tom bombadil and the scouring of the shire were both highlights in the book and important development for the main characters, the hobbits!) I still enjoy the films and I watched them first but I just prefer the books from personal preference. Let's not talk about the hobbit movies....

    I tried learning Quenya once.

And by tried I mean downloaded the files, read half of the first "lesson" and never touched it again.

I knew a guy who was pretty fluent in writing Quenya. It was actually slightly scary.

Yeah, I can't bring myself to learn a frictional language. I respect those who do though.

    Let's see... I've read:
-The Hobbit (was a part of a school programm)
-LoTR (soon after the Hobbit. Still re-reading it sometimes)
-The Adventures of Tom Bombadil and Other Verses from the Red Book (was in the same book as "Hobbit")
-The Silmarillion (I've bought this one when was in High School already)
    -The Children of Húrin
-The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrún (won't lie, it was very difficult to read).

Legend of Sigurd and Gudrun wasn't really written by Tolkien though. He simply translated it.

My biggest issue with the LOTR films is definitely the... shall we say, liberal ways it interprets some of the characters.

(Read: don't even talk to me about the injustice of film!Faramir.)

They are still good movies, IMO. People can enjoy them without knowing the source material, p. much.

While LoTR movies is one of my favorite movie series ever, I have to say that yeah, it wasn't very fair to Faramir. I don't buy the "His resistance skills are cheat and it makes Boromir look like sh*t" as a reason for nerfing.

The LotR movies are terrible because the one time they should have gone crazy with the special effects (Sauron's death), they instead had a lighthouse poofing out.

I can forgive all the flaws in how they protrayed the characters and whatnot because it was already closer than I expected, but that part genuinely upset me because if there was something I expected from a visual medium, it was special effects.

So what are all the things they got wrong with the adaptation.

I always figured it was mostly on target.

I heard that Boromir was much more sympathetic in the books.

I mean, I did read the books, but I don't remember much.

Gimli is not actually a joke character.
    Legolas doesn't do everything.
Aragorn isn't trying to run from his responsibilities and instead has been working for decades to reclaim his throne. There is no love triangle. His sword gets reforged as soon as possible instead of in like the third movie. Also he's honorable and doesn't murder emissaries from behind during parley.
Elrond is friendly with Aragorn and isn't a dick.
Faramir doesn't get seriously tempted by the Ring; he just turns away.
Denethor is a great man who fell into despair instead of just nuts.
In the backstory Sauron actually goes down fighting Gil Galad and Elendil; he doesn't murderstomp everyone and then randomly explodes because his finger got cut off after he slooowlyyy tried to give Isildur a hug or something.
Sauron's final death is actually cool and not a lighthouse looking around and poofing out.

    Such things.

Still, the movies are enough good for casual audience. Even if maybe they should bother reading the books instead.

I don't feel they're worth their length, considering the occasions for actually cool special effects weren't taken advantage of.

Unless you really really want to watch endless war sequences.
