I liked TFA until Han showed up. So, around the first third of the movie.

By the time they showed the fully armed and operational Death Star planet, I was groaning.

I have a high tolerance for fanservice but it was just too much.

Eh, it was good tolerable precisely because it was fanservice. It showed a willingness to go back to what people originally liked about the franchise.

It turns out, they took us to grandma's home, where she forced us to browse through some old photo albums we'd already seen hundreds of times.

Moving back to movie reviews, I watched "Graveyard of Honor" this afternoon - the original 1975 version directed by Kinji Fukasaku who is probably only familiar to Westerners for his final film "Battle Royale" but for connoisseurs like me he is better known for his Yakuza films.

I am bemused that the subtitles translated the word 親分 as "Godfather" as this couldn't be any more different from the Al Pacino trilogy. It also differs from a lot of earlier Yakuza films as instead of the usual chivalric portrayal, Fukasaku once again does not hold back and depicts them as the absolute scum of the earth and none more so than the protagonist, Rikio "Riki" Ishikawa.

The plot is fairly simple yet classic in that it portrays the rise and fall of the main character in the criminal world. But what makes this movie really unique is the fact that Riki is in fact a real person so Fukasaku takes a quasi-documentary approach to filming, complete with childhood photographs of Riki as the narrator explains his background for the first three minutes of the film. In addition, Fukasaku employs his iconic Cinéma Vérité-esque style of filmmaking with unusual camera angles and whatnot. The only thing that particularly bothered me was the blood effects - especially the climax where it was almost something out of Evil Dead what with the red stuff just squirting everywhere.

Given the aforementioned faux-documentary nature of the product it's hard to say whether it was a good or bad film as there isn't a structured narrative but rather a bunch of stuff happening over the course of Riki's life...but I was firmly engaged the whole time so I guess it was a success. Overall I give the film two Yubitsume's...er, that is to say I recommend it.

Watched Dune yesterday (international release day, won't be released in English for another month of so)

Without entering spoiler territory, they streamlined the story and dialogue a lot, to the point most characters feel like stubs

At the same time, they decompressed a lot the narrative

The end result is a super long movie that covers a bit over half the book, while spending several minutes on shots of ant sized people standing dangerously close to landing aircrafts.

Also featuring a mediocre Zimmer score

The film has many good things too btw

Lololol the irony of the baron saying he won't violate the sanctity of the bene gesserit when he literally raped one in his backstory

Baron flight is so awkward. Long tunic makes him look like a sandworm lol

No "who is Liet" mystery

Fremen negotiations/Stilgar encounter very simplified

Carryall plot very simplified

No time for daydreaming paul!

Can't the workers just climb onto the carryall? Changing the book introduced this minor plot hole

I see Paul is spice high as fuck lol

Yueh seems to believe hanna is alive in this version? In the book it was implied he knew her dead.

This wasn't shown in the book, but was implied

Humiliated naked leto, a departure from the book

Beacon for duncan to find them makes sense

No yueh last words, Vlad just ganks hin
Piter does fuck all and dies, sigh
Thufir also a non-character

No stillsuits? What a shitty frepack

They fucking ravaged arrakeen

Spiderbaron in the ceiling lol. I think that's an improvement from the book.

Lots of exposition in the imperial station

Sardaukar against so many fremen winning? Unrealistic

Jessica gets duncan death wrong lol
Poor Jessica she got super nerfed to make Paul look better

No air support? To kill the thopter. Yup there they are

Liet was going to a ride a worm and got sardaukar'd
Said she serves only shai hulud, badass. But contradictory? Wants to terraform.
Book Liet was very different, not a true believer like this

Fear litany twice, gom jabbar and storm thopter scenes

That thopter suffered a lot

Terrible water economy, no masks in the desert all the time

So Jamis is magical negro that teaches Paul survival skills. I guess that's a potential future?

No guild bribing subplot

Thumpers unexplained

Jessica kinda sucks. She's clueless around the Fremen instead of calling the shots.

The encounter with stilgar was watered down

These are the worst fremen ever, no mask in the sun

Last duel in first encounter with jamis, doesn't happen later like in the book

No jamis funeral, no tears, no Jessica shaming Paul about the kill

It ended.

As someone who has never read the book, but with a slight interest in the movie, I hope I'll be able to view it from a perspective divorced for the decades of baggage that a Dune movie entails.

Honestly? I was gonna complain about Seth Rogen, but I actually really liked the new Green Hornet, so, fuck it, this line up actually has me hyped. I mean, everytime I try to put any of the actors down, I just remember laughing my ass off at a lot of the shit they made, so if anything, this is gonna be a great comedy. At least, for the people that wanted it, we finally get a Parks n Rec/Philadelphia crossover in a sort. Lots of meme potential for fucking sure.
