All's well, I just need to put it together. Although there's going to be a lot fewer choices than I thought (mirrormoon's just a regular ASCII mark that we're using already, and chevrons look butt-ugly and need UTF16).

    Alright, the poll is up.

To simplify things, you get five (crappy) choices for the spoken dialogue quotes (「」). Everything else isn't terribly important and is going to be just straight ASCII quotes.

(Hosted elsewhere, lest I be accused of discriminating against the non-BL audience.)

Why's there no option for something like
"I can't 'take it easy' like this."
--which is how it works in English?

(Actually, if you had an option where the "s and 's in #5 switched places, that's what I'd vote for. Like '---Go slow and take it easy.' "I can't 'take it easy' like this.")

Mmm... The ASCII single tick I dislike, but the proper single opening/closing quotes could work. I guess that's reasonable. That would mean just replacing all current double quotes with single ones, which isn't too bad.

OK, adding it in a moment.

    Yay!

Voted #6 then (and "yes" to the first poll).

I voted "Yes" and #6. Have to be grammatically correct, after all. (can't see why anyone would want anything else, like weeaboos who want Japanese quotation brackets to be used in English)

  9. #449
Voted YES and #6. Though I thought, to be correct in the technical sense, the first question should be a NO?
Anyways, spacing makes it look better / more 'speed-readable' so meh.

    @ranmafan
What sort of delays are we looking at if you do decide to heed the fans' decision and change the dialogue styles? Or will all applicable / required edits be left for a later date?

Yeah, spacing is probably the biggest concern. And depending on whose rules you follow (and how you read them), that period could be either inside or outside the quotes... but considering there's no text ever appearing outside the "dialogue" quotes, that one would, IMHO, be quite silly. Mind you, I'm no linguist, so my opinion here is rather worthless.

These rules work great when they are applied all at once and in the environment they were intended for - that is, in printed text or equivalent. Everywhere else, it's just somebody's interpretation of the rulemakers' priorities mixed with personal preference. Thus the need for this poll...

Oh, not much at all. Probably just a few hours to figure out the right regexps and the right way of applying them. I am most definitely not doing it by hand (or asking anyone else, for that reason).

Basically, as long as everything is consistent it's not such a big deal - I wouldn't have cared much if we had finished the whole project using Japanese brackets since that's what it is so far.

But right now people are split over this and it's apparent in some of the scenes I've been editing, so we need to make it all uniform.

Also regarding periods and quotation marks:
Universal American usage places commas and periods inside quotation marks. British usage does so only if the logic of the quotation requires it.
I did not know this even though I apparently do the British way myself when I'm online. Either way, pick one and stick with it.

I had a hard time deciding between 1 and 6, but then I voted Yes and #6.
    Yay for American quotation marks!

Jesus Christ look at those results

I underestimated the weeaboos, they have strength in numbers.

I say they should remain totally true to Japanese grammatical conventions, then, and release the English version in Japanese. In for a penny, in for a pound, right?

Just follow the link in the first post.

    It's actually kind of funny.
At least the punctuation poll is going for a yes.
I'm actually surprised 12 people voted for #2. I was actually expecting it to be second-last (after fancy quotes).

Also, why are there two different site addresses for the FHA translation?
http://seiba.maidlab.jp/entrans/main.php (just found out from the poll) and
    http://vps.k-link.net/entrans/main.php (the one I use)

    They're exactly the same.

I'm thinking of slowly moving all Fate-related stuff to the new address, though (seiba.maidlab.jp). I have a pile of projects hosted on the other one, and it's starting to become a mess.

    This.

I too am not a linguist, but am a confident writer per se and treat the English language as my first, being Korean-born and all.

Option 1 - Grammatically correct if you consider it acceptable using Japanese quotation marks in written English. Some would see that as blasphemous but that's another story. Though granted, some (if not alot) of people I think wish to preserve that Japanese feel of the novel, hence why I think the influx of votes there.

Option 2 - Quote marks here are fine. Spoken text, not fine. (I don't think) it's grammatically correct here, starting spoken text with dashes.

*Option 3 - This is probably the most grammatically correct out of all 6 possibilities. Consistent use of ". That said, a reader could easily get confused distinguishing between 'spoken' and 'thought' speech.

Option 4 - Technically, wrong; using two ' to form quotation marks is incorrect, even if we're trying to distinguish between spoken and thought text. Oh, and it just plain looks wrong as well...

    *Option 5 - Technically correct

*Option 6 - Technically correct (the inverse of Option 5, per se)

    * -> Quotation marks, both single and double (' and " respectively) are both correct for either spoken or thought text. Usage actually depends on region; the US prefers the " I believe, and the UK using both equally (hence coming down to user choice). You only use BOTH when implementing speech within a speech. Can be like that vice versa. Hence, why I thought Option 3 would be the most correct.

Saying that however, I guess either Option 5 or 6 can be classified as accurate, since we're dealing with 'thought' and 'spoken' speech. But we're not being consistent (though we're trying to distinguish between thought and spoken text, hence the two options in the first place).

...Yeah... My 2-cents worth... If I got anything wrong above, someone tell me to 'facepalm'.
