How the hell do you invade a country that outnumbers you 3 to 1?
Ironically, Scotland doesn't realize that without a "successor state" clause and with my freaking mess of a Kingdom in the EU doing it's best to quell unrest in Catalonia, they'd end up crashing out of the EU in even worse terms unless something happens to Spain (which would be good).
Hence why I said I imagine they'd try to rejoin the EU first. But yeah, not even without a succession clause, even just the lack of sufficient printed currency would immediately be a problem. It's pretty clear they'd have a bad time... but the same was said of the UK as a whole over Brexit, and look where they are now.
This is not a time of sage decisionmaking.
