They aren't that different from Al-Qaeda actually. If you think the establishment of the caliphate isn't the goal of most Sunni fundamentalists I have bad news for you.

This is all because the US pulled troops out.
He never sleeps. He never dies.

Battle doesn't need a purpose; the battle is its own purpose. You don't ask why a plague spreads or a field burns. Don't ask why I fight.

I actually don't know why we aren't hitting them harder.

The US went after AQ heavily and yet here is a jidhadist state literally holding ground and beheading westerners and we just launch the odd hellfire missile at a pickup truck every now and again.

It started a bit before that. The forming of the first government and the handling of the Iraqi military are the major factors.

the iraq war should have never happened basically

As long as they don't directly attack the US they don't care.

Boko Haram "joining up" with ISIS immediately reminded me of that photoshopped Victoria: Revolutions map.

Because of domestic political and financial reasons, and if we aren't going to go ham nobody else even has the capacity.

if you actually want to stop this for the long term nuke saudi arabia

and then chase down every single person in that country with more than 1 mil in their bank account, kill them and take their money

thatd be pretty much the only military intervention thatd make the middle east safer for more than 2 months

Hey, they decided themselves not to continue.

Actually a lot of this might be this guy's fault. But that's like blaming Marx for USSR.

    I'm willing to say it.

It's definitely my fault. I claim all the responsibility.

Wouldn't it be better to pin it on something more specific, like Bush administration?

The Bush administration's actual goal was to destabilize the region so dictatorships would topple and then democracies would have a chance to flourish.

Problem was that the execution of it (immediate post war handling of things) and follow through (pulling troops out instead of keeping them) kind of botched that in Iraq.

You can see how this played out with Egypt and Syria though.
