Basically, it cuts down on the finances of the city's government. It is a way to cut down the city's funding.

But then they'd have a massive surplus from not needing to buy the police new Apache helicopters or tanks or something, so I'd all even out.

Besides this is the republicans, who would be all for this in the first place, police defunding or not. They're all about less money to any part of government that's not their own salary.

Yup. Property taxes pay for public schools, among other things. It's a move intended to make it easier for wealthy people to buy property in the area while strangling the city's services... which will lower property values across the city.

That is, until the city re-funds the police, at which point the values go back up as the city gets taxable revenue...

Makes for a great window of property speculation during the point where they fund the police again and then start hiking taxes to pay for the backlog of needed repairs and such.

Buy low, sell high.

Generally speaking, this is also a really hard tactic to argue against legally as a counter to defunding the police.

Singing some NWA and then wanting cops to stop some sexual assault isn't that bad.

There was a Pride parade in Hamilton last year (holy shit, it's only been one year?), and they explicitly banned the police from participating in solidarity with BLM. This lead to the parade being shut down by the city for not being as inclusive as they claimed. The organizers then decided to have the celebration in a local park instead, and still banned any police form showing up, even off duty LGBT ones. Surprise, surprise some fucking assholes show up and start throwing punches, and people complain about why the police weren't there to stop it.

Now that's shooting yourself in the foot.

I think that's case by case though. I mean if the culprit is holding a weapon, it is hard not to harm them to stop them. Excessive violence is one thing, appropriate force is another.
