he wouldn’t have a choice in any swing state as any non super red governor would have authority to unilaterally cancel the rally as a health concern, and that would also make for 14 days worth of terrible headlines about trump consciously exposing his own supporters. That’s not a winning play.

and cancels any further debates leaving one in which he at absolutely best failed to move the needle as the only one before tens of millions of early voters go to the polls.

That’s not really a plus. It should be, but it’s not. People view the world from a “me first” perspective. Him being a tax cheat and a racist makes people a little annoyed but no more so then a thousand other things. Feeling like they are in danger, which is exactly what this does as it conveys a “doesn’t matter who you are, you can catch it” message undermines his central argument related to COVID which is more or less that we got this thing licked and are on the other side of it now

As someone who works in public services, we are reliant on people paying taxes for funding. When people who are barely getting by don’t pay taxes I understand but when people who are rich dodge out of taxes despite the fact it would make no difference to the quality of their lives then that’s a whole other bag of beans.
