Romney's coalition turned out fine except for one critical detail. He his share of the minority vote was freaking 27 frikken are you even kidding me percent. Bush won 40% in 04 and barely won, McCain won like 32-33% and was blown out (but in his case nobody was voting R ticket so it wasn't readily apparent) but Romney made it crystal clear when the only real difference between his voting bloc and bush's in '04 was that 27%.

remember the GOP autopsy following '12? That was the whole point. Losing the minority vote by that margin killed Romney the same way it's killing sanders right now. You don't have to win them, but you cannot lose by that big a number, the math doesn't work.

Not even going into the fact that if they are illegal they can be paid below minimum wage as their wages are unreported.
You know what else is costly, and requires maintenance? All of the illegals and the social problems and secondary stresses on the system they bring with them.
Trump intends to renegotiate our trade deals with Mexico and use the savings from that to pay for it, which means the money that would've gone to Mexico is now going to the wall. (Frankly this doesn't even really matter, it's a headline grabber but the important part is building it and the long term costs it would save anyway.)
And more importantly, controlling your own borders is one of the fundamental functions of a state. You don't leave your door unlocked at night and just let random strangers wander into your living room, do you?
