Why would he leak it? Instead of getting to talk about Paul Ryan getting ready to kiss his ring, he spent most of yesterday literally hanging up on reporters asking him about it.

It also gives the impression that the best dirt they can find on him is that he pretended to be called Miller on the phone once.
I don't think so. (Also, for the record, I don't think he leaked it because there are 3 groups who plausibly had access to the original tapes, not 2) and secondly if he had leaked it himself he would have had a better response for this ready then he did.
He already stumbled out of the gates on his pivot to the general, he doesn't also need to start dropping the ratings on his personal characteristics even more then he has by reinforcing the idea he is a pathological liar.

Well the alternative to him leaking it is that it really is one of the biggest things they could find, that he played a bit of a trick on a reporter 25 years ago.
It generated a 24 hour news cycle and a bunch of page clicks. They are a news organization, that's essentially its own reward.
