My school is offering a counseling session of sorts for those "whose emotions are affected by the vitriol of this election"

It's rather remarkable, and yet doesn't surprise me at all.

Right now she's up by 200k ish. That is not final but it's hard to imagine it'll start changing much now.

She won more votes but lost the election. The electoral college is what determines the winner.

It's almost like the EC isn't democratic.

I've had discussions with several people who like the Electoral College as it is because it gives voting power to the small states.

An amount of power greater than what some of them should have if we're dividing them up proportionally yes

The big problem I have with it is that each state election is winner-take-all, so if one wins the state with 51% of the votes they take all of that state's votes. This is a problem because it defeats the supposed purpose of protecting the small states. All the EC ends up really doing is protecting the swing states.

Also the 1-vote-winner-take-all system removes the possibility of seriously considering 3rd-parties because people will be more worried in preventing someone they dislike from reaching the office rather than just voting on someone they like. This year was a bit different because given the godawful candidates we had people voted 3rd-party out of protest, but depending on their beliefs they could have put the candidate they disliked the most in office.
