To be honest it's not like the Saudi royals are exactly ascetic representatives of Islam (enough stories about hookers and booze circulating there to doubt the idea of them as any sort of paragon), it's definitely a way for them to project power (no shit).

There are non-sectarian clerics and movements but the problem is that the main talking point for people that want a united Ummah rn kind of goes along the lines of "independence from western interference" if you ask the saner ones to "US-RAEL MAKES US SPILL OUR BROTHERS BLOOD LETS FUCK THEM UP INSTEAD"

the real problem being that the 2nd point cant be quite as easily refuted as one would really like

I think it's a genuinely difficult decision for May and her team. On the one hand, they're evidently already struggling with trying to handle the mess that is Brexit, and while they'd like to hand off a lot of responsibility for Stay to Labour, being the second party and also in favour of the Union, they're already doing worse than the Conservatives without even being in government.

On the other, blocking the referendum is a fantastic way to rile up Nationalists, and I seriously doubt the situation's getting better. The longer the Conservatives are in charge, the more sentiment is likely to harden against them in Scotland; and the farther we get with Brexit (and the more its consequences become clear), the more that issue's going to hurt them.

I would have definitely been inclined to give them it.

In the case of the Scottish Independence particularly he tossed the referendum as a bone to voters in the region. It was never expected at the time to be close, and the scramble Cameron had to do to campaign in favor of Unity as it steadily became more and more apparent that he had underestimated how popular it could be made him a laughingstock, at least among my family.

From there to Brexit I don't think it's arguable that Cameron would call those referendums mistakes, because even as he won he was using political capital and campaigning against them rather than pushing his own agenda to do it, with Brexit that wasn't enough and he fell flat on his face as hard as can be. There was more than one article asking why, if Scotland leaving the UK and then the UK leaving the EU were so potentially damaging and bad, did Cameron even promise a referendum to start with.

People seem to take great amusement in the 'irony' of being a Unionist and wanting to leave the EU but the same thing applies in exactly the same way to wanting independence but wanting to stay in the EU.

Winning, I think, erased much of the chaos of the campaign from general memory.
And, if we're talking about lasting impressions, I don't think the "cybernats" did their side any particular favours either, especially as they had no victory to hide behind.

Because he thought he could demonstrate to the persistent supporters of those damaging positions that they were a minority and that the wisdom of the people was against them. And then either they'd bloody shut up or he could at least say he had a mandate to completely ignore them.
