Now, I'm far from the most dedicated citizen in following politics or policies in Ecuador and whatnot, but I take issue with some points of this article that I'd like to give my opinion on.

Moreno ran for office as a leftist but has governed as a rightist, joining conservatives to push for deregulation, a major reduction in social spending and policies that aim to isolate and demonize the Left.

This is missing some context, the previous government got into as much debt as it possibly could, the current government basically inherited a deficit from the previous one and have been doing what they can about it, if the government was to keep going there was no other option but to be responsible about the spending.

The Citizens’ Revolution, led by then-President Rafael Correa from 2007 to 2017, came after a period of instability and high inflation. Deregulation, dollarization and the neoliberal model had failed to meet the public’s demands and Correa restored a healthy economy with public projects, infrastructure improvements and tax reforms.

This is also missing a huge chunk of context, namely that the previous president, Correa, was absolutely reckless about this, he went around building schools, hospitals, hydroelectric plants and stuff related to refining oil, but many of the project were badly made, or couldn't be maintained after they were built, it was as if he was making a show of it instead of actually caring. The previous president made everything seem like it was going well, when it really really wasn't, he made broadcasts every week announcing the new projects, or showing the inaugurations of the ones that did reach completion, but never addressed the ones that turned out badly, and also he'd often insult his political rivals in those spaces because why have any class at all you know?

The previous president and his government ran at first on a campaign to get rid of the corruption in the country, in that they succeed, but... like, they got rid of all the previous corrupt politicians then they became the corrupt politicians, like having the local mob eliminated by a new mob and the citizens are still just as screwed. There's a big case for a large Brazilian conglomerate being involved in bribing many governments to build poorly made structures, of course that happened here as well, and it probably accounts for the reckless spending and excessive amounts of infrastructure that got made during the three terms the previous president served. Correa also hates the rich and taxed them as much as he could, normally I'd be all in for that but he went far enough to scare away foreign investors by announcing intent to use eminent domain on oil refineries, he also taxed certain rich people to the point of leading them to bankruptcy, then had the state buy their companies which was obviously done with malicious intent, can't find any links for that right now though.

Also the government itself has said the current situation is being exacerbated by the previous president and his followers inciting the indigenous populations towards violence, that's certainly possible, but removing the subsidy on fuels to the point fuel costs twice as much... yeah, that wasn't going to go well with the people, it might be the only way to keep the government going but it's obviously not going to make anyone happy as it'll result in the prices of everything going up. A complex and unhappy situation, but it has been coming for a long time, and honestly I feel like not a single person who voted for the previous government, fooled by the shows it put up, has a right to complain about it, seeing how they were the ones to get us into this mess to start with. They are exactly the ones who fell for the propaganda, hook, line and sinker, and are mad at the current government for what's going on though.

It just sounds crazy that the president of the most powerful country in the world now will make such a reckless decision just because of a phone call despite how even his advisers tell him how bad the decision is.
