Regardless of how monstrous he acted, the decision sets a bad precedent of favoring security and expediency over state law and Constitutional rights. Plus, what kind of actual benefit does this decision actually provide to the American people besides allowing an already imprisoned and condemned man to be killed a little bit sooner?

Never mind that this decision is absolutely going to end up as recruitment material for Islamist terrorist groups and give their ideological peers the ability to put more political pressure on their nations' leaders against the U.S.

I can't see any pragmatic reasoning behind this decision, only an ideological one.

I could see the chronic oversaturation of the US prison system as a behind-the-scenes reason for the prison to want to vacate the cell that much sooner, but as an actual compelling reason to refuse to provide what the law arbitrates, it's sorely lacking. I'm optimistically assuming this is only a matter of red tape rather than actual discrimination on religious grounds, but then again it IS Alabama...
