During the 2016 election, people asked me how I could support him when he would be so crazy. I replied that either he'd actually follow through on promises of change and we'd get something we normally could never get, or it'd all be hot air and he'd just be like every other Republican and it would make no difference.

When you have too much power concentrated on the few rich and elites, it is natural they will try to stop anything that would harm the status quo. Normally, people will eventually be fed up and demand and even fight for changes. However, the modern elites have control to media and education, transforming most to mindless drone or defeatists that don't even dare to fight for changes. They are trapped in an echo chamber and will be stuck in it until something earth-shaking occurs.

I just find it interesting that the elites doesn't seem to understand people dying is not going to be good for the economy no matter what you do. But since stocks are rising, everything is fine and dandy.

The only 2 good things about Trump are that he ripped a hole right through the facade that our leaders really do know what is best and that any mistakes we make are owed to due well-meaning mistakes and not intentional cruelty. Since he doesn't play the polite society game the media doesn't cover for him like they did with past presidents.

And also because he is a daily reminder that just because someone has a lot of wealth that does not mean they are intelligent. This is one of the most confounding aspects of the American psyche (and yes, this is a uniquely American delusion) that money=big brain smarts.

Outside of that he is just revolting.

Nah, my judgement was purely about the incoming election, and why I'd vote Biden if I were an American. I'm firmly in favor of doing stuff.

I consider Trump an existential threat to Western democracy because of the sheer lack of trust in the system he generates, and that's why I prioritize his prompt removal from office over most considerations.

The question should really be: is trust in the system warranted to begin with? This is the value of Trump. He makes more people ask this question than would otherwise.

I somewhat agree, but Trump has never been one to actually lead. The reason his term has been a typical Republican's is because he was lazy and gave all the major decision-making power to the likes of McConnell.

I mean look at where we are. So many times have I heard “no, it’s all about to come crashing down, it’s folding under its own weight. Soon it will all burn and we will rebuild!” And yet, we are right now in a once a generation pandemic that has flipped the entire planet on its head. People are dying or losing everything. Annnnnd the system itself is stronger then ever. Government is the one consistent.

So if it’s not gonna burn, and it apparently isn’t, then you can either wait and hope or start working on it. Cause the system isn’t going away. Maybe it should, but it won’t. So you can either be mad about it or work on fixing it.

if there is one thing COVID has proved is that the system will outlive us all.

Basically. And at this point, it's a global system, not just a national one. I don't see it getting better, or getting fixed, and I don't see the sort of global reaction needed to change it materializing either.

A while yet. No one's even talking about the budget hole tge Rep tax plan is creating because of this, or how it'll be impossible to pay for everything that needs to be done domestically. People are barely paying attention to the second wave starting in Wuhan and South Korea as they start to reopen. A lot more people are going to have to die before the elites get it. That, and they are going to need to realize that there's more than just a shutdown and deaths involved.

I agree. You can't wait for the revolution to happen. If you are of the left wing of the dem party you need to send the signal you want to send for change inside the system and stay home/write in, and shore up support for regional left candidates.

Probably after the fourth wave hits. So December-ish.

The first is ebbing right now, and the second is soon to come, when everyone opens too soon and gets reinfected. The third will come late summer/early fall when everyone thinks that two waves is all it takes for everyone to build up immunity to it. The fourth will show up when people assume that since heat didn't kill it, cold might, and once it gets rolling then the international co-operation (read: subtly trying to steal a vaccine for each other) will begin.
