For the tomboy article, I imagine the point is more that the word will gradually lose meaning on its own as gender roles loosen (since it basically means "a woman who acts in a not traditionally feminine way"), not that anyone specifically is trying to ban it.

Well, all words were created as a matter of convenience. Even if the word itself isn't used, the character type will still be a thing. For example, right now, for "tomboy", the first character who comes to mind is:

As for being "offensive", like I said, someone on this site taught me the word, "gamine". Generally speaking, people offended by simpler words, such as "tomboy", usually do not have the mental capacity to even consider more complicated words offensive, like "gamine".

Like a lot of online articles these days, that headline seems designed to be far more inflammatory and clickbaity than the article itself (that tweet conveniently doesn't link to the actual article). If you read it, the author seems (to me anyway) pretty clearly talking about herself and how she doesn't feel comfortable with the term tomboy, plus that everyone has the right to choose what labels they identify with. She's not saying the word should be banned for everyone and everywhere. Author even approvingly mentions her mother, a self-proclaimed tomboy, and a book called Tomboy Style, described as "an ode to fashionable women in menswear". The article honestly seems pretty banal and has nothing really to disagree with, unless you're looking to get offended by something.

*Strangely, the URL is also even more exaggerated, adding "hugely" to problematic and going well beyond anything said in the article itself, presumably in an attempt to generate even more clicks.

Also, does anyone even seriously use the word tomboy to describe real people anymore? I've pretty much only seen it in reference to fictional characters, and calling someone in real-life that does sound like it could be awkward for pretty much exactly the reasons the writer of that piece mentions. I doubt anyone cares about calling anime-girls tomboys or whatever.

Unfortunately, if you choose to have a click bait article title, people are going to react in the extreme way that you are guiding them to. True, even if that word is confined to fiction, I'd be fine with that, but then there are too many imbeciles who conflate fiction with reality, like calling drawn and rendered images child pornography, for example. Or even calling a character who is canonically 19 "underage" just because she's short. Also, in terms of this video:
