I heard the pinnacle of the final match was won through pure BS plot armor that he had no purpose actually winning.

That's the pokemon anime in a nutshell. They don't really follow game logic. Pikachu should probably be level ten million by now though. It was actually kind of cool because of the near-fainting dream where all the past pokemon including released ones like butterfree and pidgeot show up to get Pikachu to go super saiyan. I still think the Greninja vs Sceptile fight from XY was maybe the best but this was plain fun. It heavily played on nostalgia by having cut-ins of all the old cast and what they're up to now. As it should have, given the theme and name of the series.

It feels weird to think they might reset him again. If they were ever to eject Ash from the spotlight... now would be the time.

It makes one wonder, is the fact that Paldea has "Champion Rank" Trainers rather than a specific Champion a reason why the anime allowed Ash to reach this situation? Because they could simply power creep and say that the reason why there were no Paldean trainers in the World Tournament because they already have a bunch of trainers on Leon's level anyways and that's the new goal Ash has, to beat all of them and reach further heights?

Ash did not use any of his reserves in this Tournament, only the Pokémon he caught in the current series - one of which was a Dragonair which later evolved into a Dragonite.

Well, that's just stupid. Ash ALWAYS went to his bench when he was fighting seriously in tournaments and such, and he's been building a deeper bench every season. Plus, what was the point of the episode where he went back to Oak's place and showed all his old 'Mons off then?
