To be fair Lovecrafts works aren't only problematic because he's a racist, but because they are racist in their text. I think it's Call of Cthulhu that has an entire scene taking about how all the cultists were poor, black, uneducated, or insane. Started Legend of the Galactic Heroes (14/07/23), pray for me.
Yeah there's even a short story where he describes some mundane poor neighborhood with the same horror as an eldritch temple. Of course it doesn't mean you can't still find meaning in his works even given that. A core tenet of Lovecraft is simply asking "what if there are higher powers in the universe and they just don't care about humans?" and that stands apart from the racism he used to express it. Heck there's even a lot black people and those of other marginalized races can find relatable in the idea of living in a world of powerful beings who are totally indifferent to their life and interests.
Back to anime, Kenshin is kind of a weird example since it lacks a lot of the stuff many people find skeevy in manga like fanservice or lolicon, yet the author did something more horrifying and harmful to children than any of that. Personally I don't see a contradiction appreciating the works of people who did awful stuff (and you'd be hard-pressed to argue liking Rurouni Kenshin inclines anyone to pedophilia) but would draw the line at materially supporting the RL perpetrator. So I might watch the new anime on unlicensed streaming sites, but wouldn't buy BDs or whatever. Of course that runs into a more general "no ethical consumption under late capitalism" issue (are you condoning worker-exploitation if you use Amazon?) but "don't give money to literal pedophiles" still seems like a reasonable stand to make.
Also known as the "everything is at least slightly bad so give up" problem. I don't think it's hypocritical to draw lines based on what's pragmatic, so I agree that the stance against the guy is unambiguously worth taking.

Compared to the past, nowadays, anime content is quite divided. I mentioned before that, in the past, I was not such a vested lolicon back when the boob sizes were just on the smaller and bigger ends of medium, but as the medium disappeared, naturally, I gravitated towards smaller. Similarly, in terms of nipple sightings, back in the day, nipple sightings were super common even in non-ecchi anime. Nowadays, nipples are only ever sighted in pure ecchi anime, as opposed to just another genre with a few ecchi elements, such as Urusei Yatsura and Utawarerumono... And nowadays, that ecchi anime is becoming more hentai.
