https://archive.is/9YXxu "Regarding the delay of some work this quarter, this is due to the increased dependence of the Japanese animation industry on foreign countries. Although the problem of this structure has been recognized for more than 10 years, time has passed without improvement." Like I said, for the solution, Sakoku, Sakoku, Sakoku.

LMAO. The problem is there's so many shit to be made and not enough japanese people to do it, that's why rely on foreigners. The isolationism you suggest wouldn't help

On the flip side, less workers means those individual workers get paid, assuming that you have the same budget. Oftentimes, OVAs appear to be higher quality than TV airings of the same series. For example, even discounting the lack of nudity, the 2005 Guyver series looks really bad for its time, just as the 1991 Guyver OVA looks really good for its time. 90s Ova had way more budget hence higher quality.

Comparing graphic between 1991 and 2005 anime and saying that difference is because of money is ridiculous - both technologies and style changed too much to directly compare them.
And even for the same time, budget is not the only difference between OVAs and TVs - you also don't have to release episode per week for OVAs and thus have more time to work on it. And if animators doesn't have enough time to animate everything it doesn't matter how much you pay them.

I meant, comparing the 1991 Guyver OVA to other anime on the market at the time, Guyver looks better.
Comparing the 2005 Guyver series to other anime on the market at the time, Guyver looks worse.

I assume you mean the Guyver OVA that started releasing in 1989 - it was still ongoing in 1991, and in fact didn't finish until 1992. It took 3 years to release those 12 30-minute episodes.
On top of that, while I don't know about Guyver specifically, OVAs often retailed for about $80-$100 per episode, in 1989 dollars. In today's dollars, that'd be around $200 to $250 per episode.
TV shows retailed for more like $20-$40 per episode, and came out weekly.
Back in the early 90s, we used to joke that being an anime fan was more expensive than being a cocaine addict - and if measured per minute of 'high', it wasn't even close.

Finally, in 1989, there were about 150 anime TV shows, movies, and OVAs released (according to the history I can find) - including porn.
In 2022, there were almost 900. Sure, that includes web-anime, but still - 6 times as much.

Personally, I'd rather have the much larger selection, delivered more frequently, at much cheaper prices, even if the quality suffers comparatively.

The solution to the problem would be to either spend a lot longer working on each project, or to simply not produce as much anime as we've been doing now.

Now, I'm going to use Wikipedia numbers for this. I didn't want to, because Wikipedia only grants pages to projects with significant publicity. But every other site I could find also included Korean and Chinese projects as 'anime' in their listings, which complicated things. However, Wikipedia's tendency of prioritizing only things with publicity actually helps us here, you'll see why in a second.
Now, by their count there were something like 285 projects in 2022. That's really close to 300.

Now let's go all the way back to 1988. During the economic asset bubble, and more importantly, the year Akira released. Now I will use MAL numbers for this, because at this point, it does not record Korean or Chinese projects. Their estimate is 261, across all projects they have documented - including many, many low profile ones. Their estimate for 2022, counting Chinese and Korean projects, and including low profile projects, is 1051. This has almost quadrupled, and the amount of projects Wikipedia deems important enough to list is equal to the amount of anime, total, that were produced in 1988. We'll be generous and halve that number to compensate for Chinese and Korean projects. It's still like 525.

We make way too much anime. Worse still, we have to make them fast. People need their content now. But the ability to deliver that content is outside of the capacity of the amount of people living in Japan. It doesn't really matter how much you pay them - and it's already awful that we underpay them to begin with. Anime now is not merely a creative affair, it is a commercial affair, and Japan's economy isn't as strong as it used to be. The demand for anime is going to keep going up and studios will have to keep taking on more and more projects to keep themselves afloat. Worse yet, there's no easy solution for this that works because anyone can say "just make less anime duh" but no one can convince a board of directors that this is the best idea.

I suppose there's a reason why all the best retro anime are OVAs, rather than the 50+ episodes series that's more filler than plot.

A legend. Making AMVs back in the VCR days looks like it was such a crazy technical feat, it's cool that they had they idea and persevered, and now with our modern tools we can make all the meme mashups we want.
