I think the non-battle shounen manga slowly genreshifting to battle focus is more of a running out of material and editors pushing for action kinda thing than a 4D chess masterplan.

I'd always heard that he wanted to write a shonuen battle thing, but his editors were on him to write another Love Hina, so he started it that way, and once the Festival arc was so positively received abandoned the pretenses entirely.

I think I remember reading it in one of the tankobon interviews that that was the reason he made Negi so young, so all the harem stuff would look even more ridiculous.

I heard that its BDs & merchandise sold 'well enough' but majority of the reception and/or reviews for it as a whole from the west & Japan itself was still bad.

Well, Jujutsu Kaisen won Anime of the Year. Kind of funny since all the fans were shouting rigged every time it lost a category in the chat.

It's kind of amazing how they can turn a overblown 3 hour show into a tight hour thanks to COVID. Less cringe bits are always appreciated.
