Interview: Fire Force Producer Dives Into Show’s Origin, Season 2 & More

At what stage of the original manga did the Fire Force anime start moving forward?

Tateishi: As soon as the first chapter was published in Weekly Shonen Magazine. When we first heard from the editorial board that Ohkubo-sensei’s serialization was starting, our goal was to make it into an anime. That is how appealing an author he is.


That being said, of course, it also depended on the content, and we would make our decision after it started running, but after reading the first chapter, we were relieved and became very excited. We knew that this would be good, and proceeded to get our production partnership started.


We first had to establish our business relationship to a certain degree, and looking back on my emails, we first started looking for a production company at the beginning of 2016. It’s been four years since the first chapter came out. That’s a long time (laughs).

What about the series had the most impact, including feedback from the first season?

Tateishi: The opening would be a prime example. David Production declared that it would be amazingly energetic, but after I looked at the storyboards for it, they were so incredible, I inadvertently asked, “Are they really going to do this?” (Laughs.) When I saw the finished product, it looked even more incredible. If you hit pause while watching it, no matter where you pause it, the animation is meticulous. To make it look like that, when things are moving around as fast as they are, would be impossible if they were not taking great pains with their work.


In fact, when we first met with Motoki Omori of Mrs. GREEN APPLE for the theme, he said he had already read the Fire Force manga, and had brought with him a simple demo tape that they had developed from their own conception, and that became the “Inferno” we now have. At these first meetings, we usually go over what our concept is with each other, and then take it from there. But to skip that entirely and have a demo ready to go is quite extraordinary. In the past, that has only happened with two other productions with which I have participated. Linked Horizon’s “Guren no Yumiya” for Attack on Titan and UNISON SQUARE GARDEN’s “kid, I like quartet” for Yozakura Quartet.

When a creator needs no explanation from us and produces music after their own interpretation, it usually ends up being wonderful. In that sense, I can say that Fire Force‘s opening turned out in the best possible way.

Maeda said on their website that with this project hes trying to return to the roots of KEY, specifically tone back the Angel Beats & Charlotte era zaniness and go for a more Kanon & AIR era appeal. We'll see about that.

The first are still the best OP and ED of the show. The new ones just lack that excitement(OP) and melancholy(ED). The 2nd OP ended up growing on me a bit, but just didn't have the same level of... comfort, I guess. Like the first OP was all about "hey come on, let's have some fun" and the second was just "get hyped". It worked but not on as many levels.

Interview: Fire Force Animation Producer on ‘Gorgeous’ Characters, Design Subtleties

When we interviewed Producer Kensuke Tateishi, he told us that he had ideas for making a cutting-edge film, and that David Production rose to the occasion. How do you interpret that “edge,” and is it reflected in the production?


Matsunaga: First, I’m conscious of how to represent the original story as a whole as closely as possible. If anything, I try to make sure that I’m not revamping the original to give it any other characteristic visual appearance.

I think that an easily identifiable way to show off that “edge,” which also leaves an impact on the viewer, is the opening sequence, accompanied by the music of Mrs. GREEN APPLE. What sort of concept did you have for it?

Matsunaga: I wanted to depict Special Fire Force Company 8 fighting “as a team.” To that end, I considered that action scenes are what were required, so the impact that you mention is probably due to that more than anything else. To create an action scene that has impact and intricate movement, it requires a sharp sense and familiarity with action sequences right from the storyboard stage.


To that end, we enlisted Mr. Akitoshi Yokoyama to do the storyboards. Mr. Yokoyama had also done storyboards and episode directing on Attack on Titan, and I think our intention to highlight the action really paid off as a result.

Were you aware of any points of correlation with Soul Eater, Ohkubo-sensei’s previous work?

Matsunaga: Not especially, although Soul Eater had an incredibly entertaining anime version, as well. But it would not have turned out the same way even if we tried, so instead we determined to shrug it off and take Fire Force in its own direction.

They may be able to turn it around by publishing their own manga about a just barely getting by mangaka who's writer get the series cancelled because of terrible behaviour and now has to pitch his own ideas to a disaffected publisher.

In Japan? They'd arrest the girl, and send her to prison for life. The Japanese police are very not OK with people using violence to defend themselves. You are required to flee from confrontation, with some rare exceptions.

It depends. Legally, if you confess and apologize, you can usually get off with a fine (in the range of $500 but potentially up to $5000). However, if you deny it (and inconvenience the police), if you have multiple offences, you can get up to 6 months in prison.
However, that's for misdemeanor "nuisance" groping. If the police are really pissed, they can charge with assault or even sexual assault, felonies that can result in 10 years in prison. That doesn't happen often, though - Japan has a strong interest in keeping its felony crime statistics down. I remember a decade or so ago, there was an Asahi headline that touted that Japan was the safest country for women in the world, with fewer than 100 sexual assaults in the previous year! On the same page of the newspaper, there was an article from the Metro police, announcing that the first week of their annual summer anti-chikan campaign had resulted in more than 3000 arrests.

So what you're saying is, is that movie theaters don't care if people could catch the virus and die. People should be avoiding places like that anyway so there would not be a huge turnout.
