Should the file attachment functionality be disabled?

So if I'm reading this right DP is saying that the feature almost everybody hates that is bad and makes the forum objectively worse will never go away because that would negatively impact another feature that nobody has ever used and most likely never will use just in case someday, someone wants to use it. Is that right?

So talking to DP has enlightened me that removing the ability to attach would also prevent usergroups from adding content to their albums as well.

General consensus was, if you don't like it, you don't have to use it, and are perfectly free to use Imgur and Mediafire or whatever sites you opt for for hosting. That it's better to have an option you have no need for than to remove that option and have something tangentially-related get neutered as a consequence.

The whole problem is that the existence of the choice makes things objectively worse. The thing is that people that don't know better try to use it. It's like the guys discussing it didn't even bother to read what was the actual problem.

Hell, albums in user groups are a) unused, b) suffer from the same problems as attachments and c) are served much better by using a real imagehost, which is exactly why they're unused in first place.

Both should be gone.

In order of descending importance:

• It resizes images based on standards acceptable ten years ago. What was okay before is literally too small to be readable now.
• Content is hosted in the forum's servers. These are not servers optimized for content delivery compared to, say, imgur or even imageshack. They load slow as fuck.
• It can't be linked elsewhere.
• I'm pretty sure there's size limits on it.
• It forces you to view the content through a crappy viewer thing.
• Attachments create a thumbnail on the post that looks bad.

• Thumbnail size doubled from 200px wide to 400px wide. Thumbnail Quality upped from 75 to 95.
• Can't help that. It's a forum, not an image album site.
• Actually, they can be. At least, I think they can be.
• No size limit.
• Viewer disabled; tradeoff is it now loads the image in a new tab or window.
• Can't help that either.

(It's quite evident that there's overwhelming support for the proposition: any further discussion, like trying to continue to persuade DP that we don't need attachments or usergroup albums at all, can go in the Help and Support topic which is already covering the same ground and is more active).
