1. Apologize for the joke.
"Heh... Don't worry about it, Kazuha," Sheepishly, I bring my hand up to the back of my head. Partly out of nervous reaction, but mainly to feel the bump forming atop my skull, "I kind of had it coming there. Guess I took that joke a little too far."
Perplexed as to why I'm apologizing, Kazuha looks at me for a moment and tilts her head. It's obvious that it takes her a moment or two to grasp what all I just said; however, when she does, her eyes open wide as she brings her hand to her face to silence her astonishment. It's a cute and honest reaction. One of the very reasons I've grown so fond of teasing her. But when her face starts to flush a bright red, I'm reminded that I should probably start feeling bad.
"You mean you were awake this whole time...?"
She really couldn't tell...
"So... those things you said... You knew you were-"
"Aaaaah... Like I said-! I kind of took the joke a little too far. I wouldn't take it all so seriously."
Kazuha looks at me with bashful, yet inquisitive eyes. When she looks at me like that, I can't help but cut her off mid-sentence. Call it self-defense, but I don't think anything healthy could come out of something like this escalating into something big.
"Anyway..." Taking command of the conversation, I steer the topic away from anything Kazuha might throw at me and bow my head, "I'm really sorry."
I could ask what she was thinking by sneaking into my bed anyway, but it's probably best not to try and shift any sort of blame on her. Last thing I want is for this to become something she starts discussing with the family...
"Mmmm..."
Surprisingly though, she seems to accept my apology with very little enthusiasm... Her response to me is pretty basic, to say the least, and judging by her tone just now, it almost seems like she's disappointed.
"Well, if you're apologize like that, I guess it's okay..."
She states this in the same depressed tone, but she continues to hold herself back like she's scared of me. Just what the hell is this strange mixed message?
"It's probably my fault for getting into your bed like that anyway," Still, through it all, she gives me a smile of genuine forgiveness, "You weren't responding to me when I tried to wake you up normally, so I thought maybe if you saw me laying next to you like it, it might startle you out of your sleep."
Kazuha sheds some light on her train of thought as she crawls off of my bed and straightens her pajamas a bit. Then, looking at me, she sticks her tongue out playfully and gives herself a light knock on the head.
"I guess my ideas aren't as funny as yours, Shido-kun."
I can only smile.
Even if she had to explain it to me... Even if the whole thing turned into a bit of a mess... I can't help but smile at the simple nature of the girl standing before me.
"A-Anyway-! I just wanted to let you know that breakfast is almost ready. I didn't want you to have a cold meal or anything when you woke up... So I thought I'd go ahead and wake you up myself, if that was alright..."
Kazuha's words trail off a bit when she breaks eye contact with me. I can see a distinct tinge of color in her cheeks too and she seems to be getting a little antsy by staying here. Telltale signs if I've ever seen them... I'd have to be blind to miss them. But, with the way Kazuha is, I can't really be sure if I should take this signs at face value. Though a part of me would definitely like to, I've made the mistake of recklessly acting on such thoughts before...
"Uhm... I'll be downstairs setting things up. So whenever you're ready..." Snapping me out of my thoughts, Kazuha calls out to me as she prepares to leave the room, "Oh! And I tried to wake up Yuzu-nee. I think she probably sleeps harder than you," Kazuha laughs at the thought, but I can feel my eye twitch when I hear that woman's name, "If you have a moment, would you mind checking on her? Maybe you'll have better luck that I did."
And just like that, Kazuha laughs and disappears around the corner.
