Just play what's missing from the party.

It's a memetically weak class. Some people, like mAc_Chaos, love it. But they're in the minority.

Oh, that wouldn't do at all. I want something... memorable. (Also as I understand it I'm going to be some kind of rival to the party, not an outright enemy, so I probably won't have to fight them directly).

An Artificer might as well, that way you can have a range of items to diversify your performance.

Oath of Treachery Paladin, but act like you're the goodest of the good boys. Or if you want full magic, go Wild Magic Sorcerer and roll that d100.

The context, as I understand it, is that I'm going to be competing with the party (3-4 level 3's) at some sort of tournament or competition (which my friend insisted on not telling me details about so I wouldn't metagame my character, his mistrust hurt me). Wizard with utility spells and Artificer both sound fun, I've never played either. Wild Magic Sorcerer is actually one of the concepts I wanted to try in a real game, so this might be an interesting chance to test-drive.
Wild Magic Sorc can be amazing, but really depends on the DM to really let the Wild Magic shine. The DM has to play into it.

Battle doesn't need a purpose; the battle is its own purpose. You don't ask why a plague spreads or a field burns. Don't ask why I fight.
A Bard that's made of heavy metal (<-insert whatever genre here) memes
Pirate Sorcerer with parrot familiar (this was way more fun in 3.5 when it could be a refluffed Raven and thus gain speech)
Debuff-specialized rastaman/stoner Druid or Cleric
Hardboiled/noir detective-spy Wizard

I was reading through the 5th Ed PHB, and for the given example in a character creation section they say that human fighter is the most common player character. That got me to thinking, I've never played a game where anyone was a human fighter. people who wanted to be fighters went for a beefier race, and people who wanted to wanted to do big damage always chose Barbarian or Knight. Granted most of my experience is 3rd which has a fuckton of classes, but still it just seems so bland a choice.

The most common class and race combo is non variant human champion fighter. The best combo.

Ignore Mac; his opinions on the 5E!Ranger alone are grounds for declaring him legally insane.
Yeah, in 3.X there's not much mechanical incentive to playing human PCs unless you heavily restrict racial selection for players, but in 5E, Variant Human (the one who gets an extra Skill and a Feat) is still a very good choice.
Isn't his opinion that they're not terrible? Because they're really not that bad. Super specialized, but if you know you're going to be dealing with a certain kind of enemy in a campaign, like you main villain is a necromancer or something, super useful.

Advantage on Tracking and recalling information doesn't really help that much. If we're fighting a necromancer, for instance, I'd much rather have a Cleric or Paladin on the party than a Ranger.
Actually, I'd much rather have a Cleric or Paladin on the party than a Ranger regardless of the campaign. :-P
The ranger is fine power wise. Everything is close enough together power level wise that it’s just splitting hairs.
The real problem is it’s TOO GOOD at the things it specializes at, so much so that it basically removes that element from the game... which sucks if that’s the reason you picked ranger. Imagine picking fighter because you love combat but the fighter ability automatically skips all combats as wins. Now the game loses the thing you picked the class to enjoy.
