I don’t think any of them were made with malicious intent but the execution can still come off a bit weird. Archer’s design is supposed to clearly mirror Shirous (The calm blue is replaced by a vibrant red, the white parts of the shirt are replaced by black armor, his previously colorful hair is now starkly white, etc.) and I feel like “As he got older and more cynical is white skin became darker” is something you can read into. Which isn’t helped by the “even more far gone, edgy, and tragic version of Archer has even DARKER skin” type feel. Then his alternate “dark self possessed by a demon” is noticeably a darker skin tone, which would be fine if it was cause Angra’s Persian but we don’t know what OG Angra looked like too much so it’s a wash.
To his credit, none of these guys are evil (or one note at least) and are complex well liked characters, but that whole idea of “darker = bad juju” is kinda there. To be fair, the alternate is also true in that sometimes they get pale white instead (Salter is the obvious example) but idk it’s just kinda unfortunate. I don’t think Nasu means anything by it but I wish he would kinda lean away from that.
I don’t think Nasu does anything I hate with maliciousness but he does do it with ignorance. Can’t comment what was going through he head when he wrote the Detroit Emiya joke though
I never really associated the tannification with being evil but with being a corruption of their being from what they originally were. I guess in emiya alters case its because he's the more cynical version of archer hence blacker/tanner
A Case of Reverse Kratos
The lore that it was due to spell feedback was in since Side Material:
Archer recounts a story about him stopping a nuclear meltdown in EXTRA which Hakuno half-jokingly assumes is the reason for his skin color before Archer tells them they’re stupid, which is what you’re thinking of.Also, his skin was darkened from the rebound caused by using a certain spell… well, that’s the story, anyway.
.Q: Where did the Einzbern nobles get their narrow view of Japanese culture from? (That Japanese people are a tribe of headhunters, and other terrible and weird prejudices...). Did it come from their resentment of Kiritsugu?
A: All foreigners are like that. (Secret Technique: Kinoko Reverse Discrimination)

Prefer the old interviews to the current corpo-speak FGO Nasu. Nasu's current interviews feel more restrained than the old ones used to.
Back on topic, what do you like about Yoshino, Nasu-san?
Nasu (After a period of deep thought) ...if I were to talk about the romantic bits, I'd say because she's a "girl." She's strong at the core, and the oldest, so she has to protect Itsuki as a mother, so she NEEDS to be strong. It's a bit fleeting in a way. When she's disappearing while dancing happily with Itsuki at the end (*24) it may have seemed a bit like her efforts were unrequited, but I like how the story made it seem like Yoshino was happy. At that point I was like "Damn it! They got me!" Also, when child Itsuki (*25) comes back from preschool and says "I have two mothers," I was like "Ahhh, I love this!" ...that's the wholesome stuff. Honestly, I just like the erotic bits! (LOL)
All (ROFL)
Nasu It's so sexy. Not physically sexy, but mentally sexy.

Why are you not adding the parenthesis part of his answer?
To me it feels like he's just joking when answering that question. But even if he wasn't, that is a QA from 2010 which is plenty of time to change somebody's views of the world, specially when it's now even easier to interact with people around the world.Q:アインツベルンのお館様の偏見まみれな日本観はどこから?(日本人はクビカリ族だー、とか相当ひどい& ズレた日本観のような気が......)切嗣への怒りにつながったのでしょうか?
A:外国人の方はみんなあんなもんです(奥義きのこ偏見返し)。
He’s definitely more restrained nowadays but he’s still a good bit more casual than your average dev for sure. Even just comparing how Kamone talks vs Nasu makes it pretty clear how different he feels. I’ll agree that he was a lot more casual before though, I guess at the time he was just a small time dude so all of the interviews had the vibe of being with friends.

Well there’s probably a reason Waver and Luvia’s racism has been dropped in the modern day at the very least.
