Even though the translation isn't great, its still enough to understand the story right ?
Edit: I am talking about the Grand Order fan translated visual novel.

[01:11] <Pai> Dollars.

[01:11] <Pai> A... real woman?
At least its better than nothing though, I read the prologue and it was decent. At least it helps in understanding the story. Also the format of the website is fantastic.
I have reads VN with machine translation before and can understand just fine. It's definitely better than nothing if you have nothing to do and no other alternatives
Except when the terrible translation misses what was said by such an extreme that it causes plot problems later on if that translation doesn't get revised. A good example of this in an official project is what happened with FFXIII, but Siriel is the one who can explain that whole mess better.
Reread later when they got translated (i.e. Aiyoku/Grisaia/G-senjou/Eiyuu Senki/Steins;Gate)
Moege especially are very easy to read with Machine Trans. Harder one to read are Nitroplus's and particularly light's VNs. They'll kill ur brain.
I can pretty much read any moege without any difficulty understanding what is going on with somewhat limited Jap's skill and 4 years experience of reading with machine translator lol. Downside is now i get too impatient to wait for any translation for VN so I tend to just "fuck it, Atlas all the way" when I found some VN that catch my fancy.
LN are much harder because without visual/audio cues it's a lot harder to grasp what's going on with just broken english words and a bunch of kanjis
"The world is just another word for the things you value around you, right? That's something I've had since I was born. If you tell me to rule such a world, I already rule it."
idk about this confidence in one's machine translator reading skillz.
Light novels are supposed to be easy. That's literally why they're called "light novels," because they're not considered proper literature.
that said I think a world with machine translation is much better than a world without it. (have you seen that optical recognition feature they added to Google Translate app? just amazing) Just that if it's something you plan to publish for people to actually read, you should be embarrassed to use machine translation.

as for the picture posted earlier, you can tell the translator mostly understands what's being said but they can't English which is also pretty important.

but it's funny.

i would support the translation project even if it was all google translate
accidentally spreading misinformation is fine with me because i visit bl and will be corrected. and then i'll be able to feel superior whenever i correct someone's wrong information elsewhere
This is kind of reminiscent of that autist in /fgog/ talking about Solomon being unable to be summoned thing.
Anyway, don't worry, translator-kun who is doubtlessly reading this thread, every competent runer gets where he is by becoming proficient out of playing nukige rather than actually studying the language, and getting shittalked hard upon his first serious attempt at translation. Most of them don't put that first on display, though, and get shit-talked by the QC, but what doesn't kill you etc.
Machine translation (unedited) works well enough for nukige. That's all.
Ehh I never support translating works using machine translation nor I feel confident about it. What I suggest was that for people who lack other alternatives to read VNs that they want to read but do not have the translated version, then using machine translation is one way to mitigate that. It's not something that I'm proud of nor something that I widely encourage others to do since reading broken English is not enjoyable for the majority of readers. I and a few of my friends do so mostly because we like to read VNs, and waiting for translation takes eon to do so, thus not worth the wait (unless there are more people like that guy who did Grisaia no Kajitsu who has insane translating speed).
The reasons why I say Light Novel is a lot harder to read than VN with machine translation is because VN has characters sprite, BGM, voices, etc that works as cues to make you understand stuffs better compared to a LN with a few pictures.
Most LN has fairly simple wordings/kanjis/sentence structures though so it's not that hard to read. But god forbid you reading things like Nisio Isin's LN with machine translation
