Not really? It's less obtuse than Pokemon, honestly. SMT doesn't have IVs and EVs and Shinies and Natures and what have you. It is somewhat famous for being difficult and that's not entirely baseless, but most of that difficulty has been optional recently.
Hidden values are barely important if you are not into competitive Pokemon. Baring online, Pokemon is a very simple type advantage game that doesn't require heavy grinding unless someone intentionally limit theirself.

I haven't played Extra, but I think it's possible to make the rock-paper-scissors setup interesting.
