Does Extra change in any meaningful way between the two protagonists or do people want the female lead simply for the sake of having a female lead?

Nope. IIRC the only things that change are you get a couple of optional lines of dialogue where you question Nero or Tamamo about why they like you even though you're a girl.

Nero is fine either way, Tamamo is willing to magic a dick for female Hakuno if need be, and female Hakuno can tease Mumei during the Rin route in one of the My Room dialogues.
So, nothing of value will be lost.

So since oblitus arc seems to be the first main one, what if it's actually split more or less like this, but the first arc is coupled with the "this is a post-HGW setting" theory? In other words, something like the first part following Hakuno making his way through the ruined theatre searching for something, and having the events of that EXTRA version (since it obviously seems to be different) retold through flashbacks and such. This way, depending on what the story actually ends up being, Illustrius could serve as more of a finale with Hakuno resummoning Nero and saving the day (since "special broadcast" doesn't really scream "second full feature story arc" to me).So, here's a theory (all images from released PVs):

The interactions don't change at all based on player gender in that route though, like if anything I prefer Gil with the male protag because it feels extremely gay
