There is no such a thing as ‘Sakahara family’ in the moonlit world. At the very least, the Sakahara family she was born in has always been an ordinary family. They are no magus nor they develop psychic abilities, for a century they are simply a law abiding citizen that never caused any trouble.
Sakahara Saiai is no exception of that fact. Sure, her parents died in an accident and she & her twin sister must survive alone. She learns how to play the flute through a mundane means by simply training every day and pushing herself beyond the limit of others. Because she loves to play her flute, because she wants to be the best in Japan. And so she enters a very elite music school to achieve her dream. But that’s all there is to it.
Or so, that’s how it's
supposed to be.
During her first year of high school, she and her sister began to experience a sudden increase in their bodily temperature. They fall ill more often, sometimes unable to attend school for more than a month, and they take a suspended absence until their condition improves. Yet, Saiai continues to practice her flute outside of school, becoming even more skilled than her peers, she still hasn’t given up her dream just yet.
Their condition only grows worse and worse, as one day they noticed ‘head tumors’ on their forehead. These are no tumors, these are a symptom that they will grow a pair of horns.
Horns of
Oni.
Unknown to Saiai, her ancestors were originally Oni hybrids related to the famous
Shuten Doji. To hide their very jarring inhuman characteristic that is their horns, they become a
komuso, wandering monks that perform street flute music to attain enlightenment, as these monks typically hide their head with a straw basket. At some point they have been affiliated with the
Demon Hunter Organization and the
bakufu as their spies, but the gradual decline of their blood makes them weaker and ineffective for combat, and slowly they fade away to obscurity that not even their descendants are aware of their unique ancestry.
Saiai is a
shakuhachi prodigy, her performance with the Japanese bamboo flute is beyond ordinary and her deceased parents know that, they decided to put all of their resources for their daughter to hone her abilities. However, they don't realize that this is the very same music that their ancestors play, and it unknowingly awakened her and her sister’s dormant Oni-blood simply from daily exposure to the music.
In 2002, during a family trip to visit a relative, Saiai, as always, played her flute whenever she got bored. Her father, who was driving at that time, suddenly awakened his long-dormant Oni-blood and lost control of himself, causing an accident that killed both of him and their mother.
The same thing happened in 2007, she was performing her flute to celebrate her fellow patients that have been cured from a rare disease, yet as she plays it quickly devolves into a horror. Her sister, unable to control her impulses, killed 12 people in the process. This incident reached the DHO’s ears, and her sister was taken by them. This is the last time she saw or heard of her sister.
As what happened to her after that, it seems that one of the doctors has a connection to the moonlit world, and noticed the ever growing condition of her forehead is supernatural in nature. Rather than bringing her to DHO’s custody, she was sold to a Chinese magus and experimented on for years to study mixed–bloods and demonic possession. Unable to defend against the magus, she decided to submit to her fate, in exchange that she can continue to hone her skill as a flutist.
Another incident happened in 2008 in China, Saiai who became the mistress of the magus ordered by her master to play her masterful flute performance in front of his guests. These magi suddenly enter a state of mania and begin to open fire with each other, killing them all including her master. This time, it was done deliberately, as she finally understood that all the two incidents in the past were caused by no other than her own performance simply by connecting the pieces of information from her master’s magical practices.
Saiai grows by herself in the city of Shanghai performing street performances. Now she understood to control her magical gift, she began to use it to smuggle and thievery. However, her horns make her unable to blend with modern society, making the moonlit world the only place for her to survive. Yet, at the same time, the moonlit world recognizes her unique heritage, she becomes targeted by many to earn cash or to study. Her only choice is to get entangled into the Chinese underworld, and within a year she has smuggled thousands of drugs and illegalities, and murdered more than 70 men. There is no peaceful day in her new life.
Enters
Fang Trading Company, a syndicate which has been expanding their influence in preparation to storm the Spiritual Tomb of Albion to gain its power.
The boss, witnessed and impressed by one of the carnage Saiai caused, decided to recruit her and grant her their protection. Saiai, who had been treated like a subhuman ever since she reached China, found home in her new master’s utilitarian view, thinking it as a fairer treatment of another human being rather than judging them by their heritage such as being a half-Oni.
As an FTC operative, Saiai became infamous within the Chinese underworld, earning the nickname “Siren of Fortune” due to her irresistible musical performance, and her 100% success rate during a deal. However, her appearance is far from reassuring despite the misleading epithet, as the name came from the fact 'the deal
should be successful no matter what' when she is around. One could easily conclude that the deal is extremely important and valuable by proxy of her being there.
Her musical performance is capable of boosting allies’ strength and vitality beyond most humans.
Her musical performance is capable of moving allies’ paralyzed, unconscious or recently dead bodies.
Her musical performance is capable of overloading allies’ magic circuits or philosophy keys.
Yes.
She is much less a goddess of victory, but more of an inhuman and efficient enforcer to ensure the company’s interest, and Saiai is more than happy to please her savior.
