Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't France '40 an even worse historical clustershit because the Germans smashed them at Sedan, same place where they broke the French in the War of 1870?

France in '40 had buggered itself over a stubborn belief that the attack would be a repetition of '14 "but with tanks", which ruled out according to the General Staff the possibility of an Ardeness breakthrough.

This happened in spite of 1)photos clearly showing the concentration of German armoured divisions near the Ardeness and 2) the results of a French military exercise where the attackers had perfectly managed an Ardennes breakthrough with tanks.

It didn't help that Gamelin in '40 was on a nervous breakdown.


For the rest, no, there was absolutely no reason why French had to lose so badly right from the start.

French stubborn stupidity of those days is truly breathtaking.

I know it's not as sexy to miltech nerds as shuffling around this tank brigade or fortification but we now know that had the West actually protested the Rhineland reoccupation the military planned to purge the government, so if you really want to avoid WW2 (in that form at least) there you go.
