Merlin is mentioned as guiding Bradamante in her quest. Granted, it's a bit of a stretch to go from there to "aided Charlemagne and the Twelve Peers", especially since they already had a Merlin-like figure in Maugis / Malagigi (although he was a lot more hands-on, since he was one of Charlemagne's knights, not just the emperor's advisor), but if I had to guess, the writers seem to be conflating Merlin with Maugis on a superficial level (for instance, in the former wielding a sword just like the latter).
