The overarching plot takes an eventual direction I've never liked but it's still got a strong cast and many great moments along the way. Eva, Natsuhi, and Beatrice are all very powerful.

To me, Umineko's main fault is that it's a tricky/unfair story that forces you to go back and reread to actually appreciate it.

Which wouldn't be a big problem if it wasn't so bloody long!

Which is why I prefer the manga, which is both more concise and in-your-face.

The manga is kind of a botchjob, though not as much as the anime. Being more in your face literally runs in complete opposition to the themes of the story and makes you Bern and Erika.

Also gross, a musicless version of Umineko.
