I'm not sure how valid the comparison between the franchises is, but anyway, I think HP's/Rowling's crowning achievement is really into how eminently human they made wizards be. They make asses of themselves watching sports, they have politics, they get stuck in red tape... sure, the elements of heroic fantasy are there too, with the prophecised hero and the wise mentor and all, but rather than just show "the cool parts", Rowling spends the majority of each book on Harry being a normal kid who complains about too much homework, falls asleep in class, copies notes from his friend, gossips about girls...
Nasu's take on the other hand is a lot more mystified. Magic is mystery, he hammers that with every opportunity. To be a magus is to walk with death. His magi, while all different kinds of people, all are to the last one somewhat fucked in the head; divorcing yourself from reality is in fact the only way to be a good magus. (Though probably a terrible human being).
