HF is objectively the best route because it has Archer being soft to Rin and Illya.

when faced with the question, which is worse - persistence in the tyranny of an abstraction on aesthetic grounds (Fate and UBW) or the attainment of a concrete form of life (domesticity) on top of a mass grave (HF True)? you must answer (like Stalin when asked to choose between the right deviation and the left deviation) "comrades, they are BOTH worse!" sniff
anyway the only proper end to fsn is, obviously, HF Normal. shirou's problem cannot be solved within the terms of reference set, but it can be - after a fashion - gracefully completed in a properly tragic form

I hate Fionn mac Cumhaill. There are plenty of outright villains I enjoy more than him. Shinji has a backstory and reason for being the way he is, trying to live up to his families ideal that he knows he'll never actually accomplish.LioRio is a stalker who wants to prove himself to his crush. Even unrepentant villains like Gil, Zouken and Kotomine can at least acknowledge their villainy and have the abilities to work towards whatever their goals are. Fionn has the egotism of the later combined with the character of the former. And he's supposed to be a hero, for some reason.

Gilamesh never acknowledges his villainy, because as far as hes concerned, what hes doing is the only way to mankind back on track to being awesome. Given the larger context of Nasu, hes absolutely correct in this judgement, just not right.
Also, Fionn did do some actual cool stuff prior to Diarmuid and Grainne, and the way he lost his first wife is definitely not his fault. Admittedly, the Nasuverse does focus more on how pathetic and weird he is than anything else, so that opinion is understandable.

The whole point of Fionn is that he was a great and noble hero who corrupted by the end of his life and let bad feelings and experiences (like what happened to his first wife) to get the best of himself, and at his very last battle he recovered that nobility and died. The whole stuff with Diarmuid and Grainne is just a single tale of his whole heroic life.
Also the Fionn in Fate makes clear he is actually ashamed of his own actions with Diarmuid and feels bad for it. It's just he is the jokey man to Diarmuid straight man. And then this very New Years event make clear he is actually everything but pathetic. I don't see how you can compare him to Shinji, Gil, Zouken and Kotomine of all people.

It just seems like every time we see him in FGO he's talking about how great he is, and if something actually comes to fight he just sends Diarmuid to do it instead. And whenever Diarmuid brings up how strong he is and how he could easily deal with things, Fionn scowls and dismisses it.
I'm sure his actual legend is pretty good, but in FGO he has done nothing at all to earn him any goodwill.
Because I can understand where they come from with their characters. But Fionn seems to exist only to make Diarmuid suffer, for something that was out of his control. And that's perfectly fine for a secondary character. But not one who gets his own portion of the narrative. Especially when given that spotlight, instead of fleshing him out just has him hit on Mash and Ritsuko the whole time.

Diarmuid is a worse character than Fionn, because while both are equally terrible, at least Fionn has a semblance of chance of being good someday.
Meanwhile, Diarmuid's already unimpressive character is simplified into Fionn's cheerleader or Artoria's fanboy, depending on the class.
I think you are constructing a teasing and a boke-tsukkomi relationship as something more malign that what is actually being portrayed in FGO. It's just a joke dynamic between the two. Both seem pretty much fine with it and are happy to fight together again, that's the truth.
Also as I said, in this very event you actually get to see Fionn being smart and solving a situation thanks to his wits. They even show that if Diarmuid is someone who is too serious (to the point of being unable to crack a joke) and deals with stuff in a super direct manner, Fionn is more of the very smart ossan type that actually helps a lot along the way and likes to make silly jokes. They are made to complement each other.
True. But at least Diarmuid had FZ to be developed into something on his own. Fionn has only FGO to go off and what's there is terrible. Unless Fionn is in one of those Fate spinoffs I've never seen like CCC or Strange/Fake.
Maybe because it's just not a good one? I get what they're trying to do with the duo, but it's just not funny. Maybe because Dairmunid is a straightman, but Fionn is the one with power. Mash is more the Tsukkomi to both of them.
As for Fionn in an event, that's on the JP server I'm guessing? So that's two years out from me getting any exposure to it.

I think it’s funny that Fionn is always going on about how beautiful and hotmazing he is but anytime he interacts with a girl they just look at him and go “ew”
It's powercreep, but with hotness.
